Four Years After: BUNVIC’s September 29, 2022 Youth Empowerment Programme Remains a Defining Moment for Over 100 Youths in Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere

The people of Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere Federal Constituency witnessed a major youth empowerment initiative on September 29, 2022, when the then member representing the constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Olusegun Odebunmi, popularly known as BUNVIC, distributed empowerment items to selected youths and students.

The programme, which focused on youth development and capacity building, featured the presentation of HP laptops and cameras to beneficiaries following ICT-related training. A report published by National Insight News on the same date also stated that 50 motorcycles were distributed to selected youths as part of the empowerment initiative.

The intervention was aimed at providing young people with practical tools that could support their skills, education and economic activities.

According to a subsequent account of Odebunmi's constituency activities, 108 youths had previously undergone training in cinematography and filmmaking, with each trainee receiving an HP laptop. The report listed areas covered by the training to include video editing, production, script writing, film acting and photography.

The September 29, 2022 programme further expanded the focus on technology and entrepreneurship by providing equipment to youths and students while also giving motorcycles to selected beneficiaries.

Focus on Youth Development

The empowerment programme formed part of a series of capacity-building initiatives attributed to Odebunmi during his representation of the constituency.

Earlier reports also documented his involvement in youth training programmes. The Nation, for instance, reported in March 2021 that Odebunmi presented 50 laptops and 15 cameras to youths who had participated in cinematography training sponsored in December 2020. The training covered filmmaking, video editing and film directing.

The reports indicate that ICT and creative-industry development formed part of the broader youth-focused interventions associated with his constituency activities.

Motorcycles Distributed to Beneficiaries

Beyond ICT equipment, the September 29, 2022 programme also included the distribution of 50 motorcycles to selected youths.

According to the later account published by National Insight News, the motorcycles were intended to provide beneficiaries with an avenue towards becoming more economically self-reliant.

Photographs from the event show beneficiaries gathered around motorcycles and receiving various items during the programme, providing a visual record of the day's activities.

Part of Wider Constituency Empowerment Programme

The September 2022 initiative was not an isolated intervention. Reports on Odebunmi's constituency activities documented several programmes involving youth training, agriculture, ICT, creative skills and other forms of empowerment.

A subsequent account reported that another major empowerment programme was held on December 31, 2022, involving farmers and artisans who received various tools and equipment.

The September 29 programme therefore remains part of the documented history of empowerment activities carried out within the Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere Federal Constituency during Odebunmi's tenure.

A Day Remembered

Four years after the event, photographs from September 29, 2022 continue to preserve the activities of the day, including the presentation of ICT equipment and motorcycles to beneficiaries.

The programme brought together youths, students, community members and other stakeholders, with its central focus on skills development, access to productive equipment and youth empowerment.

For the beneficiaries who received the items, September 29, 2022, represented an opportunity to access tools intended to support their individual economic and professional pursuits.

September 29, 2022, therefore remains a notable date in the documented record of youth empowerment activities in Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere Federal Constituency.
